Medicare Fraud And YouMany senior citizens are concerned that possible fraud, waste and abuse are bankrupting Medicare.
Inappropriate payments were estimated to cost Medicare about $20 billion, or 11 cents out of every dollar, in 1997, according to TREA Senior Citizens League. The Medicare Hospital Insurance Trust Fund is operating at a deficit and may be completely exhausted by 2008, according to the League.
"If the rate of fraud, waste and abuse could be reduced by just half, Medicare would be restored from operating at a deficit to operating in the black for five more years," said League Executive Director Michael J. Zabko.
The League is calling on Congress to pass legislation that effectively clamps down on fraud and eliminates waste in Medicare.
